National Organization News

We are pleased to announce the addition of Penny Hosley to the National Staff.  Penny's new position as National Membership Coordinator became effective May 1, 2008.  She will be taking care of membership renewals for the organization.

Ms. Penny has been a member of SIS for three (3) years and served as Chapter Director for Tulsa Chapter A.  She has been a great supporter of the organization from the first day she joined. Penny rides a beautiful Honda Gold Wing trike like the pro she is.  She placed her trike in a bike show and won first place (it still had the dealer’s tag on).

We want to Welcome her to the National Staff of Sisters in Spirit Motorcycle Association for Women.

  Rally Information

2008

Van Buren, Arkansas

June 13th and 14th

________________________________________________________________________

I think you will find the rally for 2008 as much FUN and entertaining as last year.  I know those of you who attended were pleased with what all took place by the feedback we received from you.  Last year the date was in August and this year the date is in June.  We will be moving the date around until we find a date that is best for all.  Last year the feedback we received from the members stated August was the most popular time for everyone, June was the second choice. So, we are trying to please by moving the rally date to June this year. There is a problem with kids being in school for some members.

The children all get out of school and start back to school at a different times throughout the country, so too accommodate those with children we are looking at a different date for next year. Maybe in July, that seems to be the only month when the children are all out of school. So, we will see. We are trying to get a site and date in place so that it may be announced at this years rally. By announcing one year ahead will allow for more planning for everyone. Please be patient with us.

 Spirit Ride

2008

 Location: Best Western Hotel

                Van Buren, Arkansas

                June 13th-14th 2008

The hotel accommodations are great. We have been able to get a reasonable rate of $73.80 per day (split beds for double occupancy so it could only cost $36.60), which includes a daily breakfast of biscuits and gravy, fresh fruits and much more. Just about anything you could want in the way of breakfast foods. You may contact the Best Western Van Buren for reservation at (479) 474-8100. There is also a KOA Camp about 3-5 miles from the Host Hotel. You may contact them should you be interested in camping.

The rally registration will be the same as last year $55.00 for members and $65.00 for non-members.  Sisters Misters fee is $35.00 for the two day event.  Opening ceremonies will be the morning of June 13th at the Host Hotel.

Van Buren, Arkansas is a small town just out of Ft. Smith Arkansas, which is located about 115 east of Tulsa, Oklahoma.  This is the location for the mini series North and South which was on television some years ago.  There are all kinds of antique stores and lots of shopping and plenty of good food. The riding in the area is BEAUTIFUL, lots of curves and plenty of free historic sites to enjoy.  The hotel is one quarter mile off of Interstate 40, so it is easy to locate.

You will be provided with evening meals on Friday and Saturday of the Rally.  So, the only food cost you will be out at the rally is your lunch. Pretty good deal for $55.00.

I hope this information is helpful and allows you too plan for the event. We are looking forward to seeing all of you who attended last year and lots of NEW faces as well. Rally registration will be posted to the web site SOON!

See you at the Rally.

National Rider Education Director

National Organization News
New Year's Greetings to my fellow Sisters in Spirit:

I'd like to say hello to all and introduce myself as your National Rider Education Director.

I am a strong believer in the importance of any rider education programs for all levels of motorcyclists.  I started riding street motorcycles about 9-10 years ago in New York state.  My prior experience consisted of some mini bike and dirt bike riding as a kid in Oklahoma, then pretty much just on the back of the bike for a number of years as an adult living in New York.  After a brief, but successful, bout with cancer in my mid 30's I found myself hitting 40 and afraid after 5 years of remission!  Afraid of cancer returning, afraid to enjoy my life.

So I took the bull by the horns and tackled something to end that fear.  I always wanted to get back on a bike, but not on the back anymore.  Here enters rider education for me.  I took 6 hours of private instruction, then the MSF Basic Rider course over a weekend and passed.  It was the most exciting and empowering experience for me, my own personal gift to myself for achieving 5 years of freedom from cancer.  I went out and bought my first bike, a Honda Shadow 600, then eventually the bike I still have now, a 2000 883 Harley Sportster Hugger.  I went on to take the MSF Experienced Rider course.  Now that I am back living in Oklahoma, my new goal is to enroll in the Rider Coach course here and hopefully instruct other new riders one day.  I consider all the instruction I received my most valuable asset as a rider.  It has helped me enormously.

During my years as a motorcyclist in New York, I served for 5 years as Secretary for the Dutchess County chapter of ABATE of New York.  ABATE (American Bikers Aimed Towards Education) in New York is active in working towards legislation to benefit motorcyclists.  We met with local politicians to discuss our issues and concerns, held an annual Freedom Rally ride to Albany, the state capital, to bring those issues to state officials, as well as fund raising events for charities.  One accomplishment during that time period was the lowering of tolls for motorcyclists.

I now look forward to my new position, to provide rider education information to all the Sisters to keep you all smart and safe on the road.

Best wishes for the New Year and keep the rubber side down!
